SAN ANTONIO OPERA TAKES HIATUS TO PREPARE FOR FUTURE
SAN ANTONIO (January 5, 2012) The San Antonio Opera Board of Directors announced today that it has cancelled the February production of "Don Giovanni".
San Antonio Opera will use the hiatus to attempt to address the organization's financial obligations with creditors as well as plan for the next phase in the future of the regional opera company.
"Our number one concern is to support the musicians, performers and patrons who have been responsible for so many successful seasons in our company's long history," says San Antonio Opera Board President Jorge del Alamo. "Despite the cancellation of 'Don Giovanni', it is our hope at this time to continue our season in June with the production of Rossini's 'The Barber of Seville'."
"Certainly this is a tough time for arts organizations across the country and our organization is no exception. However, the San Antonio Opera would like to assure our patrons and the entire San Antonio community that our organization is making every effort to ensure we can continue to serve the city and its arts patrons," says del Alamo.
On the company's horizon is the scheduled opening of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts slated for 2014, which will bring new attention and excitement to our city. "The citizens of this great city have invested $165 million in what will be the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts and we must live up to their expectations," continues del Alamo. "With that, our company is focused on creating a path for our organization to continue providing the community world-class opera produced by an organization that represents the city and has a long history of successful performances."
The San Antonio Opera organization also encourages the city's leadership to begin to serve as catalysts to ensure community-wide conversation and support occurs.
