Bruce B. Johnson

Managing Director, San Antonio Opera

Bruce Johnson has been an active leader in the San Antonio performing arts arena since moving to San Antonio in 2002, having served for one year as the President and CEO of the San Antonio Symphony (the senior staff position) and three years as President and CEO of the San Antonio Opera (the Chair of the Board).

Dr. Johnson was born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas and educated as an engineer at Texas A&M University. Initially assigned to the NASA Johnson Space Center by the military, Johnson's career shifted to computer systems engineering with leadership roles on the Apollo Docking Simulator and Shuttle Mission Simulator projects. He was recruited by Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) as part of a new high-tech leadership group in Chicago. He became a Partner, with responsibility for Accenture's technology research centers. After retiring from Accenture, Dr. Johnson co-founded a hedge fund focused on technology. After his second retirement and a move to San Antonio in 2002, Dr. Johnson became actively involved in the performing arts of San Antonio. He assumed the role of Managing Director or the San Antonio Opera in 2009.

Dr. Johnson is a member of the Community Integration Committee of the Bexar County Performing Arts Center Foundation, a member of the Community Advisory Committee for the selection of the next Music Director of the San Antonio Symphony, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Children's Chorus of San Antonio. He is a graduate of the San Antonio Master's Leadership Program, a member of the American Guild of Organists and a former Board member of New Music Chicago and the Naperville-North Central College Performing Arts Association.

His love of opera was honed during 20 years as a subscriber to the Chicago Lyric Opera. Avocations include playing the pipe organ and piano, boating, pets and travel.

Dr. Johnson is married to Anne Johnson, herself an active leader in several performing arts organizations in San Antonio.
