Sam Mungo (Captain Corcoran)
Samuel Mungo's professional directing credits include Die Entführung aus dem Serail for Florida Grand Opera, Il Trovatore for San Antonio Opera, Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado for Colorado Light Opera, and Trouble in Tahiti for the Boulder Opera Project. As Executive Director of Colorado Light Opera, he received critical acclaim not only as producer but for directing Pirates of Penzance for the company. Of the season, the Boulder Daily Camera stated, "Producer and director Samuel Mungo has managed to bring a new level of artistic quality." In January he was appointed Artistic Director of the Altenburg Music Festival Academy in Altenburg, Germany to begin in 2011.
As a singer, he has performed with opera companies and orchestras throughout North America, including Don Giovanni for Minnesota Opera and Chicago Opera Theater, Vancouver Opera as Falke in Die Fledermaus, Opera Theater of St. Louis as Junius in The Rape of Lucretia, and Danilo in Merry Widow for Sacramento Opera, Opera Grand Rapids and Knoxville Opera. Making his Carnegie Hall debut with Milos Bok's Missa Solemnis, he has sung with the St. Louis Symphony, Colorado Symphony, Utah Symphony and Orquestra Filarmonica di Lima, among others. He will travel to Greece in 2011 to sing and direct a staged production of Orff's Carmina Burana. He also enjoys a distinguished career as a teacher and educator. Sam is the Director of Opera Studies and Assistant Professor of Voice for Texas State University. Recent productions at Texas State include Die Fledermaus, The Magic Flute, Turn of the Screw and Candide. He has served on the faculties of The Actor's Studio Drama School (seen on Bravo's Inside the Actor's Studio), New York University, University of Colorado at Boulder, and The New School University. In demand as a Master clinician, he has been asked to Austin Lyric Opera, Sparkling City Opera, Southwest Missouri State University and University of Utah. He received his Doctorate from the University of Colorado at Boulder and his Masters in Vocal Performance with honors from the New England Conservatory.
